About Johnsons

Where Johnsons Recycling started

Johnsons are a family owned business primarily dealing in scrap metals founded in 1976 by Alex Johnson the current managing director. In those early days Alex provided a collection of services to many local businesses for the disposal of their scrap metals from factories, construction sites, demolition, transport firms and garages o name but a few. As the business grew Alex was able to purchase a hiab lorry crane which he mounted onto a lorry which allowed him to lift larger material such as cars and machinery.
About 1985 Alex and his younger brother Brett opened a yard in Darby Road, Folkestone trading as Johnson Brothers which allowed them to break cars to recycle parts as well as scrap metal sales. Those were very busy times with the brothers collecting cars and vans from garages, general public, local councils and supplying scrap to Sheerness steel, they also started to recycle non ferrous metals at this time, unfortunately Brett suffered a bad motorcycle accident leaving him unable to work. This was another turning point for Johnsons, Alex moved to a yard in St Johns Street, Folkestone trading mostly in non-ferrous metals buying sorting and grading ready for supplying secondary metal processors nationally with the help of his son Clynton joining the firm.
Currently the business is located at their new yard in Park Farm Industrial Estate, Folkestone still run by Alex and Clynton with the help of Alex wife Lynn, company secretary and daughter Natalie, serving customers old and new prompt and fairly. The company is growing steadily and still has a strong customer base going back many years.
